Powered by Nature - The Four Elements Hotel in Amsterdam is the perfect example of a revolutionary, innovative eco-hotel without sacrificing comfort, luxury, quality and style.

Sustainability is their driving force and in turn, they use the elements as the driving force of their sustainability, hence the name. They are completely energy neutral, have a zero-waste policy in the Food & Beverages, use locally and sustainably produced products in their restaurant and only use allergy-free material.

To top it off, the stylish interior, from furniture to glasses, from linen to shower heads, has a sustainable, circular story. This eco-deco approach includes wood-floors made from salvaged timber, reborn linen from cut leftovers, low-emitting paints and fabrics and furniture from recycled PET bottles.

    Natural Air Conditioning

They use gravity, wind and sunlight to form a natural air conditioning system. It is the first hotel in the world to do so. The concept of transforming the building into a ‘climate machine’ is based on the natural ventilation system found in termite mounds. So cool! The system provides fresh air, heating, cooling and energy, with excess thermal energy being stored underground.

    Herbs Garden Restaurant

Of course, their sustainability mission is clearly visible in their restaurant. The chefs use locally and seasonally produced ingredients (many in their own herb garden) with short supply chains and a zero-waste policy to create delicious dishes. Because of the pandemic, we were invited to try out their weird but fun dine-in-your-room experience, where they set the table in our room with a stunning view over the IJ lake. We received a call every time the next course could be picked up at the lobby. The courses were both original and delicious.

Luckily, by the time of our second visit to the Four Elements hotel, the restaurant was open again so we could finally fully experience their Herbs Garden restaurant. This restaurant is a green oasis full of plants and vertical herb gardens, overlooking the boats in the harbour. Dining in the room was kinda fun in the lockdown, but this is so preferred! They have a separate vegan menu with delicious dishes. My favourites were - surprisingly - the seasonal salad and the carrot burger! Who would've thought!

    Breakfast time!

During our first visit in the lockdown, we got a vegan breakfast platter in bed after a night in the huge, comfy bed!

Their breakfast got a major update between our first and second visit, now serving a delicious savoury platter, a plant-based yoghurt and a sweet pancake breakfast! The latter being the absolute highlight if you ask me. So incredibly fluffy and light!

    Sky Lounge

Last but definitely not least, they also serve delicious cocktails (and other drinks) in both the Sky Lounge with incredible views over the IJ lake, and on the sunny terrace by the harbour.

Thank you Four Elements Hotel! For the great hospitality, delicious vegan food but most of all, for showing the hospitality industry that comfort, luxury and sustainability go perfectly well together. See you soon!
