Rhotia Valley Tented Lodge is a project that we were very excited to visit and support. After two Dutch doctors were shocked by the number of orphans in Tanzania, they decided to take action. They bought a piece of land with two hills in this beautiful valley near Ngorongoro.
They built a children's home on one hill, where they have now taken care of dozens of orphans, take care of them and offer them a future. All this is financed with the income from the beautiful lodge they built on the other hill. By staying here, you therefore contribute to this initiative.
The project
The main goal of the project is to give as many orphans as possible a safe home and a chance for a better future. With the income from the lodge they can provide them with a safe home, education, food, clean drinking water and medical care. But in addition to caring for the orphans, this project also involves the local communities. Not only does the lodge create many jobs, but they also offer traineeships and internships in the bakery, the coffee shop and on the farm to give local young people a better chance of getting a job elsewhere. With the vegetable and herb garden, farm and solar panels they aim to become completely self-sufficient as soon as possible.
The accommodation
This may just be the most gorgeous tent I've ever slept in. The view over the valley is breathtaking, the bed is comfortable and the bathroom is spacious and beautifully built. In the huge, high-ceiling lounge you will find plenty of soft sofas and chairs, at the bar you can order drinks and if you want you can take a dip in the pool. Because it is a bit higher in altitude, it cools down in the evenings and there are no mosquitoes to bother you.
The food
The chefs prepare a delicious meal for you, made with fresh ingredients from their own vegetable and herb garden and bakery. Chances are you will be served by people from the local community who are being trained in hospitality here. And they clearly do so very well, because we were served extremely well throughout our stay and had a delicious meal.
In short, a visit to Rhotia Valley Lodge is a very special experience and you also do a good deed with it. I would definitely recommend a visit!
