As a vegan in Arusha, Tanzania, it can be quite challenging to find vegan-friendly restaurants, let alone ones that are fully plant-based. I did the research and tasting for you and would like to share my three favourite restaurants and a vegan-friendly hotel with you in this article. All of them were very well hidden, but all of them served delicious vegan food.
Green Mountain Hotel Arusha (3-star)
Let’s start with our accommodation, because finding a vegan-friendly hotel in Arusha, with of course a proper vegan breakfast, was not easy. Surely, other hotels probably offer some vegan options too, but Green Mountain Hotel was the only one that clearly stated this online, already has the word “vegan” on their restaurant’s menu and I read good things about. The bed is comfortable, the room is basic but very spacious as well as very clean. You can tell they put a lot of effort into decorating the place in their own style.
The breakfast buffet is served from their restaurant and offers a variety of delicious vegan options. Staff is knowledgeable and otherwise very eager to doublecheck for you. You can enjoy your breakfast outside in their tranquil garden, with tropical birds singing and flying around. A very peaceful, safe place just walking distance from the chaotic center.

Themi Living Garden
Don’t miss out on this very special place! In this green oasis, you almost forget that you are still in the middle of the big, busy, chaotic city. Themi Living Garden is a women-run community center where women with disabilities have the opportunity to work and learn to grow their own food, where artists give and follow workshops and exhibit their art in the middle of the park the project maintains. Every afternoon from 12:30 they serve an incredibly tasty 100% vegan lunch buffet in which you can fill your own plate for a ridiculously low price. By eating here, you support this beautiful project.

Spices and Herbs Ethiopian Restaurant
At this Ethiopian restaurant, you can enjoy a delicious injera with all kinds of vegan stews. I found the bread a bit sour to be honest. The spacious, open restaurant is somewhat hidden in a dark street off the main road. After dinner, the restaurant called a taxi for us, which they strongly recommended we’d take to the hotel instead of walking this part in the dark.
Five Chutneys
This little restaurant is so well-hidden in a dark hallway that you will be pretty sure you're going wrong. Just continue and at the end of the hallway on your right hand, you will find this little Indian restaurant with a very extensive, beautifully designed menu with fun names for their dishes. Unfortunately, we only came here for a quick snack, but after tasting these and seeing the menu, we would have liked to try the entire menu here (despite the restaurant being a bit dark and so charming).
